Also known as ASX, Haematococcus pluvialis algae extract

Fat-solubleYes — take it with a meal that has some fat
  • Any time; consistency matters more than timing.
  • Astaxanthin dissolves in fat, and how well you absorb it depends on fat in your diet.
  • Skin trials gave it with or after a meal. One study found about 2.4 times better absorption than before a meal.

Check with your doctor first if…

  • Medicines: how astaxanthin mixes with common medicines has been poorly studied. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take any medicine.
  • Long-term use: long-term safety is largely unstudied.
  • Reviews describe it as well tolerated, and eye studies reviewed in 2020 reported no side effects.

Amounts studied

Skin trials: mostly 4 to 12 mg/day (two used 2 mg/day) for 4 to 16 weeks. Other trials: 6 to 20 mg/day, most often 12 mg/day. One eye-strain trial: 4 or 12 mg once a day for 28 days.

What the research says

AreaEvidenceSummary
SkinModerateA 2021 review of 8 small trials found astaxanthin improved skin moisture and elasticity compared with placebo, but not wrinkle depth. Most trials were small and done in healthy Japanese women.[1]
Eye comfortLimitedA few small trials reported less eye strain in screen workers and quicker eye focusing in adults over 40 who took 4 or 12 mg a day for 28 days.[3]

Questions

Should I take astaxanthin with food?

Yes. It dissolves in fat, and skin studies gave it with or after a meal. One study found about 2.4 times better absorption than taking it before eating.

How long does astaxanthin take to work for skin?

Skin trials lasted 4 to 16 weeks. Over that time they found better moisture and elasticity, but no clear change in wrinkle depth.

Does astaxanthin help with eye strain from screens?

A few small trials suggest it may help with eye strain and focusing, but the research is limited. Most of the eye research so far is in animals.

Can I take astaxanthin every day?

Trials gave it daily for up to about 24 weeks, and reviews describe it as well tolerated. Long-term safety and drug interactions are not well studied, so ask your doctor if you take medicines.
