When to take Cayenne Pepper
Also known as Capsicum, Capsicum annuum, capsaicin, red pepper
No study shows a best time of day for cayenne, so take it at the same time each day. Capsaicin, the compound that makes it hot, can cause stomach upset or a burning feeling in some people.

Check with your doctor first if…
- Blood thinners: capsicum may raise the risk of bleeding. Use caution and ask your doctor if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicine.
- Nightshade allergy: people allergic to plants like potatoes, tomatoes or paprika can react to cayenne too.
- Breastfeeding: skin rashes have been reported in breastfed babies whose mothers ate foods spiced with red pepper.
- Stomach: capsaicin can cause a burning feeling and stomach side effects. Trials reported upset stomach, diarrhea and a hot feeling in the mouth.
- Capsaicin cream: do not apply it to the breast or any skin a baby might touch.
Amounts studied
Capsule trials used about 1–1.25 g of red pepper a day, 2–5 mg of capsaicin-type compounds, or 3–9 mg of non-spicy capsinoids, for 4 to 12 weeks.
Follow the serving size on your product’s label.
What the research says
| Area | Evidence | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| Metabolism and appetite | Limited | Capsaicin and its non-spicy cousin capsiate slightly raise calories burned and fat burning, and may curb appetite. The effect is small and most studies were short.[1] |
| Healthy cholesterol levels | Limited | A review of 11 trials (609 adults) found a small change in LDL cholesterol and a borderline effect on body weight. The authors say larger, better trials are needed.[2] |
