When to take Pomegranate extract
Also known as Punica granatum, pomegranate juice
Pomegranate extract can be taken at any time of day, because no study has tested a best time. Most research used pomegranate juice taken daily for weeks, so a steady daily habit matters more than the hour.

Timing
| Best time | Any time of day |
|---|---|
| Food | With or without food |
| Fat-soluble | No |
- Any time; consistency matters more than timing.
- Many studies used pomegranate juice rather than supplements, so results may not match extract capsules.
- In exercise studies, pomegranate was given after exercise, or both before and after, for 1 to 8 weeks.
Check with your doctor first if…
- Side effects: pomegranate usually has none, but some people get stomach or gut symptoms.
- Allergies: allergic reactions to pomegranate have been reported.
- Plant parts: the root, stem and peel may not be safe in large amounts. Check which part your extract is made from.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding: drinking the juice may be safe, but little is known about extracts. Ask your doctor first.
- Medicines: if you take any medicine, talk with your doctor before using an herbal product, since some herbs and medicines interact.
Amounts studied
Most studies used pomegranate juice, not capsules. Exercise studies used 20–1,500 mL a day of juice or extract for 1–8 weeks; there is no standard studied amount for extract capsules.
Follow the serving size on your product’s label.
What the research says
| Area | Evidence | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| Heart health | Limited | A review of 22 trials found pomegranate, mostly as juice, helped support normal blood pressure, but results varied a lot between studies. NCCIH says more research is needed.[2] |
| Exercise recovery | Limited | A review of 10 small studies found pomegranate did not improve most muscle recovery markers or soreness. A short-term effect right after exercise was seen in a few studies.[3] |
| Blood sugar | Limited | NCCIH says pomegranate may only slightly affect blood sugar levels. It has shown no clear effect on cholesterol.[1] |
