When to take Vitamin D3

Also known as Cholecalciferol, Vitamin D

Take vitamin D3 with a meal that has some fat in it, because fat helps your body absorb it. Any time; consistency matters more than timing.

  • Any time; consistency matters more than timing.
  • In a study of 50 healthy older adults, taking vitamin D3 with a meal containing fat raised absorption by about 32% compared with a fat-free meal.
  • In a small clinic study of 17 people, taking vitamin D with the largest meal of the day raised blood levels by about 50%.
  • Vitamin D helps your gut absorb calcium, so the two are often taken together.

Check with your doctor first if…

  • Upper limit: 4,000 IU (100 mcg) a day for adults unless your doctor advises more. Too much can raise blood calcium and cause nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness and kidney stones.
  • Calcium plus vitamin D: in one large trial of older women, high calcium intake combined with vitamin D raised the risk of kidney stones.
  • Medicines: ask your doctor if you take orlistat, statins, steroids such as prednisone, or thiazide water pills.
  • Trouble absorbing fat: people with conditions such as celiac disease, Crohn's disease or some liver diseases may absorb less vitamin D.

Amounts studied

RDA: 600 IU (15 mcg) a day for adults up to age 70 and in pregnancy; 800 IU (20 mcg) a day over 70. UL: 4,000 IU (100 mcg) a day for adults. Vitamin D3 raises blood levels more, and keeps them up longer, than vitamin D2.

What the research says

AreaEvidenceSummary
Bone healthModerateMany trials show vitamin D plus calcium gives small gains in bone density in older women and men. Results for falls and fractures in people living at home are mixed.[1]
Muscle strengthLimitedVitamin D is needed for normal muscle growth, but studies of vitamin D supplements on muscle strength have given inconsistent results.[1]

Questions

Should I take vitamin D in the morning or at night?

We found no studies showing that time of day matters. What helps is taking it with a meal that has some fat, every day.

Do I need to take vitamin D3 with food?

Yes, it helps. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, and a study found about 32% higher absorption when it was taken with a meal containing fat than with a fat-free meal.

Is vitamin D3 better than D2?

Both raise vitamin D levels. Most evidence shows D3 raises blood levels more and keeps them up longer than D2.

Can I take vitamin D with calcium?

Yes. Vitamin D helps your gut absorb calcium, and many bone studies used them together. Keep your total calcium within limits, since high calcium plus vitamin D raised kidney stone risk in one large trial.

Can I take vitamin D every day?

Yes, daily is how it is usually taken. Stay at or under 4,000 IU a day unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
